There will be no opportunities to make up the final or submit it or the research paper late. After the deadline, no final exams or research papers will be accepted for any reason. I encourage you to submit your papers as early as possible, well ahead of the timed deadline as a precaution against unexpected events.
Essay Topic
In your introduction
Describe the ideal structure for an essay that applies one text to another. (For example, an essay that applies a work of philosophy or psychology toward understanding a film or fictional work or vice versa.)
In your thesis statement
Identify one aspect of that comparative essay structure (you described in your intro) that you are good at and one that you wish to improve based on your performance in your essays in this class.
In your body paragraphs
Support your body paragraphs by quoting from your own writing in your own actual graded essays.
• Please do not quote from Dr. Kwa’s comments since the emphasis should be on your own opinion.
• Use first person (In Essay one, I wrote, “XX”).
• Make sure to follow up each quotation with a 4-5 sentence explanation of how it supports your topic sentence claim.
ORGANIZATION REQUIREMENTS
1) Introduction: Your paper will need to have a one-paragraph introduction that is no longer than half a page. See instructions above.
2) Thesis formation: Thesis needs to be the last sentence of your introduction. The thesis should sum up what you plan to discuss in the body paragraphs.
3) Body Paragraph Organization and Unity: The main idea of each body paragraph should differ from that of the other paragraphs; in other words, every paragraph should argue a different point.
4) Topic Sentences: Each body paragraph must begin with a topic sentence that makes a claim that the body paragraph will then develop. Since each paragraph discusses different points, topic sentences should not all be identical to one another.
5) Concluding Sentences: Each body paragraph should end with a concluding sentence that restates topic sentence main ideas and adds supportive reasoning. The goal is to summarize the main examples you covered in that body paragraph.
6) Quotations: You will need to support any assertions you make with a discussion of quotations from your graded essays. All quotations should have an introductory phrase and should abide by the following format: In Essay X, I wrote, “XX.” All quotations should be followed by 4-5 or more sentences that provide a detailed explanation of how the quotation supports your body paragraph main ideas.
7) Title: Centered. Double-spaced like your heading and the rest of your paper. Capitalize all key words. Not underlined or in boldface. No period at the end of the title. Follow the General : Specific MLA format. Your title should not just copy the title of this essay prompt.
8) Conclusion: A place for you to summarize your thesis and add any comments that do not directly support your thesis but might be relevant to your previous discussion. Should be no longer than half of a page.
9) Transitions: Add transitions to your essay. Be sure to vary where you place the transition word; do not always place it at the beginning of the sentence. Sometimes the more appropriate place is in the middle.
