Writing II Sections 10 and 21 Final EssayThe culmination of our Writing II: Utopian Literature course is your 6-8 page Final Essay comparing and contrasting the two books we have picked apart in our class discussions, Plato’s Republic and Thomas Mare’s Utopia. Your essay should accomplish two things: I) Compare and contrast the ideal societies described in the Republic and Utopia. To make a full comparison, describe the similarities and differences between specific elements of Socrates’s imaginary city and the supposedly-real Utopia recounted by Raphael. (To be completely thorough, you might also mention Socrates’s “First City” or the other countries described by Raphael.) This section should be about half the length of your essay. 2) Present your own argument about what statements you think these two utopian visions make about human nature and human society. Be specific about how you see the point of view of each author on the most important ideas discussed in the two books. As part of your discussion, you might find it useful to contrast the views of Plato and Thomas More (or their characters) with your own or those of other writers or thinkers you may be familiar with. The essay should be in MLA format, with citations and a Works Cited. Your Works Cited should list, at minimum, Republic and Utopia. If there are secondary sources you would like to quote to help you make a certain point, you can, but it’s not necessary—I am mainly interested in your own interpretations of these texts.
