assignment requiremments :
Write a minimum 500-word response that critically reflects on this week’s film and reading/s, relating them to each other and specifically discussing the historical significance of the film. Your response should demonstrate your understanding of the reading and the film. Do not simply summarize the film. Rather, discuss how that film has contributed to the aesthetic and/or technical innovations in film history. Also, consider how each film reflects and influences its socio-political context. You must use proper citations for all sources in your response. Below are some questions to serve as generic prompts for reflection. You do not have to address all of these questions in your response.

What are the central arguments made by the films and/or the texts and how do they relate to each other?

What social, cultural, political, or historical issues are brought into focus in the films and how?

What themes emerge from the films or texts and how do they relate to the historical context?

Describe the aesthetics of the film and discuss how they contribute to the development of film language.

What role does this film play in the history of film in terms of its aesthetic, technological, and or socio-political contributions?
In addition, Citations and Prompts:
citing sources is absolutely a must-have skill for every academic work and you will encounter this many, many more times in your career and life.

Missing sources or a flawed/inconsistent citation style is, in harsh words, plagiarism and can lead to serious consequences.

We have put together a short overview for you and helpful links.

In general, ANY content that is neither based on your own stream of thought, personal opinion, nor general knowledge, NEEDS TO BE GIVEN A SOURCE. This is to give credit to the creator or author – if not, you are plagiarizing his/her work.

It is more than okay (even if it might look ugly) to have a ton of references in your paper (in addition to your own thoughts, conclusions you draw, opinion etc.).

Alter between these:

Direct quotes:

1.

o usually for shorter statements and facts

o need to be surrounded by quotation marks and cannot be edited (only changing the first letter to lower/upper case is allowed, but you cannot even change a cursive format or make a word bold!)

o reference goes right behind closing quotation mark

o might need page number depending on citation style

E.g. (APA):
Urban farming “aimed at improving food access among low-income communities in urban areas” (Signer, Sowerwine & Acey, 2018, p. 2).

According to Signer, Sowerwine & Acey (2018), urban farming “aimed at improving food access among low-income communities in urban areas” (p. 2)

Indirect quotes / paraphrasing:

1.

o e.g. for background research or paragraphs that you summarize

o Use your own words

o No quotation marks & do not take more than a few consecutive words over (would be a direct quote again)

o Reference goes after the sentence ended

E.g. (APA):
Urban farming has been developed to improve food access, especially for urban communities with low-income. (Signer, Sowerwine & Acey, 2018)

According to Signer, Sowerwine & Acey (2018), urban farming is a method that has been developed to improve food access, especially for urban communities with low-income.

Get familiar with one of these citation styles (most of the time, you are free to choose as long as you are consistent), learn how to format a bibliography, how to use in-text citation and check how the requirements differ for direct quotes or paraphrases (indirect quotes).

These are the basics – whenever it comes to a more particular case (e.g. citing videos, sources with unknown authors etc.), it can indeed get tricky, but you will find instructions for ANY case under the links below.

In addition, the Center for Excellence Writing at UB offers help, workshops, one-on-one consultancy. We highly recommend taking advantage of this. http://www.buffalo.edu/writing/students/undergraduate.html

Please – take this to heart as it’s a serious matter and we don’t want anybody to have points deducted, or worse, failing a course or with actual violation of the academic integrity policies being expelled from UB.
