Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner (2007), authors of the LPI studied what leaders actually do when performing at their best. They concluded that leadership is a set of skills and abilities that can be learned by almost anyone who has the desire and commitment to improve. Those skills and abilities are summarized in The Five Practices that are common to most extraordinary leadership achievements.

Each of The Five Practices includes two commitments that describe what leaders do to accomplish extraordinary results. These are listed below:
