You are home visiting your parents for Thanksgiving and is attending a neighborhood function with your parents. During this gathering, you overheard a group of your parents’ friends talking about the new neighbor and their 7-year old child Kay. Your parents had shared with you earlier that Kay was diagnosed with ASD when she was 3 years old. The neighbors are discussing how Kay makes a lot of loud noises when she is outside playing. They also noticed that Kay sees neighborhood kids play outside and always wants to take their toys. They think Kay’s behavior is due to her parents who are too busy at work and not responsive to Kay and dont know how to handle her behavior and parent her. One of the neighbors continue to talk about all of the hype around autism and her belief that the prevalence rates would not increase if we had mandated parenting classes.
Consider what you have learned so far about ASD (e.g. characteristics, prevalence rates, myths, parent perspectives), how might you approach this situation? What would you say to the neighbor? Would you approach Kay’s family about this issue? If so, what would you say?
