Here is the poem.

The first assignment is to use the psychological perspectives (or, schools of thought) to explain behavior.  To do this you need choose only one of the two examples of behavior listed below.

(a) real life or fictional individuals (fictional situation may be derived from novels, movies, plays or songs.  Remember, song lyrics tell stories, too!  If you choose a song, please provide me a YouTube video link, as I may not be familiar with the song.)

(b) The Lottery (short story by Shirley Jackson)

Remember, you are “explaining” behavior and thought based on the perspectives.  For example, you could discuss how behaviorism would explain Tessie’s behavior.  (Tessie is one of the character’s in The Lottery.)  You may explore: what behaviorism would emphasize to clarify her actions or choices; or, you could focus on what she learned, or, what were the environmental influences that shaped her behavior.  Be advised, this is an attempt to become familiar with the theoretical explanations, not to diagnose…although you may be sorely tempted to do so 🙂

Technical instructions:

  • use three of the psychological perspectives (theyre located in Chap. 1 and the Week 1 class notes)
  • define the perspectives, then cite the source, then explain the behavior based on the perspectives
  • if you choose The Lottery, please apply the three perspectives to Tessie, Ol’ Man Warner and Mr. Summers
  • APA format for in-text citations which is also known as crediting your source.  In this case your source is the course textbook; the editors are Wood, Wood & Boyd.

*Following are examples of using in-text citations to credit a source.

Course Textbook: When you define the humanistic perspective, you must identify the source of your definition.  It will look like this: Humanistic theory explains behavior by focusing on our capacity for choice, growth, andfree will (Wood, Wood & Boyd, 2017, p. number).  The digital version of the course textbooks does not include page numbers, so they won’t be required in your citation.  However, if you use the hard copy, page numbers must be included.

Class notes should be cited like this: (class notes)

Weekly topics when quoting from the weekly topic, it should be cited like this: (narrative), or. (Jordan, 2019)

If you are unfamiliar with APA format, you are instructed to the OWL at Purdue online, or, the American Psychological Association (apa.org).  Both sites explain and give examples of in-text citations.

**The short story, The Lottery, is located under the Week One Folder on the Course Content page.
