1) The subtitle to Hunter Thompson’s novel is “A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream.” What is the “American Dream”? How does Thompson’s novel critique the “American Dream”? Develop your response with sustained and direct textual reference/support.

3) In the novel, the narrator, Raoul Duke, expresses outrageous, extreme attitudes–and his behavior is also extreme. Yet in at least one section of the novel, he expresses a very humanistic perspective. How can we reconcile these differences? Are we meant to take his extreme attitudes seriously?

5) The novel is set during a very contentious time in America. In particular, the Vietnam War was still raging. Discuss the author’s references to the events of the Vietnam War.
