Discussion: Inequalities and Mobilization

Answer the following questions and post to your group’s discussion on Canvas.

 

The objective of this week’s discussion is to deepen our understanding of the social inequalities associated with sexual orientation and gender identity. As always, feel free to use your search engine, just cite your sources.

 

(1) Select a community organized around sexual orientation or gender identity (e.g., a broad one like women or a more specific one like queer men or trans women of color). Identify the community and describe one domain in which it faces inequality, for example:

-economically (in wages, job opportunities, etc.)

-politically (under police and the law, etc.)

-culturally (in educational and religious institutions, etc.)

-privately (among families, friends, and peers, etc.).

 

(2) Find and share with us one empirical measure of inequality in the domain (differences in outcomes, such as wage gaps, health disparities, differential risks of violence, etc.).

 

(3) Find and share with us one way members of the community have taken action into their own hands to call attention to and demand redress for the inequality.

 

(4) Choose one of this week’s readings and explain how it addresses this week’s main theme on inequalities and mobilization.
