After reading the first 4 chapters, you’re probably feeling pretty confident about your knowledge of clinical research. I’m sure you’d be shocked to learn that clinical research is difficult and even the most well-renowned researchers in the field face challenges. If you were in their shoes, what would you do? How would you go about uncovering a new disorder? How would you develop a treatment for the disorder?
In this discussion, you are integrating what you learned from chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4 and demonstrating that you understand the how and why of scientific methods in clinical research. You are applying your knowledge of research design and methods in your reflection of how to best study a psychological disorder and/or treatment. You don’t necessarily have to tackle issues related to both a disorder and a treatment, unless you would like to. I want to see that you are able to understand (at least in a rudimentary sense) how clinical research is conducted and some of the challenges involved.
Write a discussion post that addresses how you would implement a study examining a new disorder and/or treatment. There are many issues you could discuss, but consider addressing some or all of the following questions/points: What type of research methods would you use? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the methods you chose? How would you determine if people had the disorder or not? How would you know they are getting better with your treatment? What ethical dilemmas would you face? How would you avoid some of the historical mistakes made in our field?
