Music is a big part of our lives. And a significant part of Popular Culture. Even if you do not consider yourself a big fan of a certain song/performer/genre/group – Music surrounds us everywhere –TV, movies, commercials, church, elevators….
So, what does our popular music reveal about our society’s values? For this assignment, you will be conducting an analysis of music. In your analysis, you will reflect on societal trends, values and culture. As well as your own personal musical preferences.
In your assignment, please reflect on ALL of the questions below.

Consider a song that is currently a mainstream hit in Canada. You will find this song by referencing the top 30 songs listed onBillboard’s Canadian Top 100 for this week.

Name the song, the artist and review the lyrics.

What do the lyrics reveal about the values of its listeners?
Does the song value love, money, a perfect relationship, sex, fun, violence, social responsibility, non-conformity, or/and revenge?
In your opinion what about this song’s message appeals to alarge part of society today?

Consider your own music listening habits – is there a song’s lyrics that appeal greatly to you (does NOT have to be Canadian). Name the song and artist and briefly explain your personal connection to this song.
Which Canadian musical artists do you like/ respect/ or listen to the most? What do you find so appealing about him/ her/ them?
I have used the term ‘musical artist’ specifically this week. As I have pointed out in the slides, musical stars are not just about the music anymore. There is great money in creating publicity stunts, racy Instagram’s and controversial ‘Tweets.’ I would like you to use class content, and your critical thinking skills to pick any area related to the music industry and why it may have a negative impact on society. (This could include a certain rapper’s words, a star’s choice in attire, a musician taking a particular political stand, drug use and promotion….)

This assignment is worth 10 % of your final grade.
Your assignment will be graded based on your completion of the answers. Your analysis should refer to course content and involve a high degree of critical thinking (well thought out opinion, that is thoroughly explained and/or possibly backed up by research or evidence).
Grammar and spelling will also be considered when grading your paper.
It should be typed and submitted on Blackboard.
