The discussion board post assignment concerns Dope Jersey, a video concerning “testamonials” from drug users who are telling their stories about their substance use, their backgrounds, their current lives and why people, particularly children and teens, should not begin using drugs. When you have finished watching the video, please address the following issues:
- What are your thoughts about what the many stories revealed? Did you find any commonalities, or were the stories without any pattern? What were your impressions about how the speakers looked, sounded or otherwise presented themselves?
- Were there any specific individuals that particularly were of interest to you or that you felt connected with? What was it about them that made you have that reaction?
- If this individual was a client that you were assigned to see, what techniques would you use to engage them? How would you conduct an assessment? What would you consider as you made a treatment plan?
- What might have been the motivation of these speakers to tell their stories?
- What countertransference did any of these speakers trigger in you (that is, what feelings came up for you? What do you think specifically about them triggered those specific feelings in you. Is there something about yourself that you can aware of that might be vulnerable to those triggers? (You don’t have to be specific or too revealing about this last question if you don’t want to be – just think about it for your own growth.)
