The following are answers to the questions attached in your email.

Hopefully, these answers will suffice in helping you along with your project.

If you, or your professor have any questions or concerns, please feel free to respond to this email or call me at the number below.

1. As a nurse manager, my responsibilities surround the care of our customers/patients keeping in mind the four pillars of True North: Safest Care & Best Outcomes, Exceptional Experience, Compassionate & Committed People, Affordable & Efficient Care. These four pillars encompass everything from employee engagement, scheduling, education, budgeting, all the way to keeping track of unit itemized needs and utilization.

2. In my opinion, for any good leader, style of leadership is situational. Sometimes one would be strategic in going from one style to the next to fit the situation or task at hand. One day a manager may need to be authoritative in the emergency setting while supporting floor staff with a difficult to handle situation on the unit, leading the tasks without negotiation, rather do as I say for now, and we’ll huddle thereafter. Other times a manager may need to be transactional, not necessarily using tangible items, rather time perhaps, ie “stay over for the next four hours and I’ll let you out 4 hours early tomorrow”. A good leader knows that being malleable to situations is using intelligence to effectively and efficiently lead or guide any group of individuals.

3. Unless there is a specific event taking place on the unit or in the building to be aware of, generally a week’s work here is focused on the tasks at hand from shift to shift, making sure my team are prepared for the patients getting admitted to our units. I do have clinical coordinators to help, but they also need guidance and help to handle certain situations. This is besides the administrative duties I have of ranging from scheduling to quality meetings, educational necessities, and leadership development. This week we had structural development being done on both of my units, which posed an obstacle for staff and patients alike. Such events take innovation and ingenuity to solve and keep the operation going.

4. There are many aspects of my work that I’ve learned to appreciate overtime. I appreciate being helpful to my team, my patients, the hospital system as a whole, as we care for our community. I appreciate being in a role where I take lead in the charge, so to speak, toward any obstacle we come across.

5. My least favorite part of this work would have to be conflict and resolution between staff. Nothing makes for a more difficult, ongoing problem that you see no end to more than conflicts between staff members, none of which can be proved. A true dilemma that unfortunately is inevitable to face in any leadership position.

6. Problems for us come in all shapes and sizes, from what type of patient is being admitted to our unit to electronical problems and technical difficulties. Sometimes the list seems to be endless. One must prioritize and take them one at a time, as best we can. Also, I’ve learned not to allow matters to make me feel overwhelmed, as I can only do so much in a day. When things get difficult to handle, there’s always someone to reach out to for help and guidance. Even leaders need someone to guide them sometimes.

7. Sometimes work can take up more time than others. This depends on events taking place around the system or the building, or even just the unit in particular. Sometimes I work less hours in a week than expected, other times I work more. I try to keep a balance for how much time I spend on actual work. I say actual because I carry my work phone wherever I go because my team are instructed to reach out to me for guidance. I do not like coming in the next morning to an event that may have happened on the unit without me knowing about it.

8. Currently there is quite a nationwide shortage in nursing. Taking up nursing as a career should be done because one truly wishes to help people in their darkest hours. Sometimes the pay is not enough to accept the stress us nurses acquire.

9. Nurses are viewed as heroes! In the last couple of years, often I would be walking in a grocery store after work wearing scrubs and people would be so kind as to say, “thank you for all you do”. This is a very heartwarming gesture to hear.

10. At one time I was trying to get into a school of medicine. Long story short I got accepted into a school of nursing. I don’t regret it in the least bit, as I have discovered much of myself in the last few years that I may not have should I have gone to a school of medicine instead of nursing.

11. My first nursing position was in a local ER.

12. Other than the requirement of having at least a BSN, I learned that to hold a leadership position, one must acquire or otherwise possess a particular skill set called “soft skills”. Such skills are needed to be a good listener, to speak in a manner that others can understand and learn from, rather than feel intimidated or attacked. This, I learned is what is necessary to lead in any field, let alone nursing.

13. Currently, other than the degree and licensure, I hate to say there’s not much more required as a strategy to get a position in this field other than knowing how to fill out an application.

14. I highly recommend utilizing your school’s online library for articles and information necessary for career development.

15. I’m grateful for the path I’ve chosen or which upon me has been bestowed.

16. One piece of advice I offer to anyone, let alone someone going into nursing is to self-reflect before looking outward.
