You may put punctuations within our outside the quotation marks, but which ever must be used consistently paraphrasing requires in-text citation of author and year of publication, no page number required 7) Academic integrity Students may not write their essay collaboratively No computerized plagiarism detection program will be used in this course phrases and statements may, from time to time, be searched online Evidence of misconduct will be judged harshly 8) Late penalty No essay shall be accepted past December 23 at 12pm without medical notation. ALL medical notation are accepted at my discretion. 9) Exemptions Students must provide official documentation for consideration of extensions or stays of deductions. Acceptance of documentation is at my discretion. 10) “Don’t dos” (especially what I have just done) unless they are in a direct citation. Do not use: contractions (e.g., “don’t” = do not) use race code words (e.g., “black market” = illicit market/underground economy; “dark” = somber; “blackmail” = extortion) language that discriminates on the basis of gender (i.e., female =subordinate; male = supraordinate colloquialisms or common speech redundancies (e.g., “off of” = off/from, or “revert back” = revert/go back) abbreviations (e.g.,“legit” = legitimate; “stats” = statistics) start sentences with “This”. Or, if you do, do so rarely. Why? Because the preposition “this” refers to a clause with one subject, even when the subject consists of multiple parts confuse “than” with “then” and vice versa a quotation as a stand-alone sentence or very rarely start a sentence with conjunctions such as “however”, “therefore” and “thus”. Move them instead to parentheses (e.g., “However, Mandeep went to the store” = “Mandeep, however, went to the store” or “Mandeep went to the store, however”)
