Nafta responseInitial PostSince its passage just 25 years ago, NAFTA has been controversial and, more recently, has become a favored punching bag during the last presidential election and continuing into the current administration. In addition, many analysts assert that the controversy over NAFTA has cast a negative shadow over recent efforts to forge trade deals. Along with President Trump, many manufacturing groups in the US claim major job losses from the US participation in NAFTA, particularly in the northern industrial states. Others assert that there has been a shift in manufacturing from northern industrial states such as Ohio to southern Sunbelt states like Texas and that overall US manufacturing employment has held steady. In Mexico, agricultural groups similarly point to job losses of over a million jobs in that sector. The controversy has been ongoing since even before the the agreement was signed (you may recall Ross Perot’s “giant sucking sound (Links to an external site.)” in the 1992 presidential debate). The controversy intensified when the US trade surplus with Mexico turned into a trade deficit shorty after NAFTA was signed and before virtually any of its provisions went into effect. The collapse of the Mexican peso, the shift in trade patterns, and the passage of NAFTA is a good lesson in the difference between correlation and causation. More recently, President Trump made renegotiating NAFTA one of his top priorities, resulting in the USMCA that was passed by both houses of Congress, ratified by both Canda and Mexico last spring, and went into effect in July, 2020.In the meantime, there are good lessons to be learned here. With over 25 years experience, there has been ample opportunity for follow-up research on the impacts of NAFTA on the economies of the US, Mexico and Canada. In this week’s discussion, you have a choice about how to approach things. If you would like to focus on and describe some of NAFTA’s overall impacts on the U.S., Canadian, and/or Mexican economies, please do so with support from your own research. Alternatively, if you would like to do a little research on the impact of NAFTA on the industry in which you work or an industry in which you are interested, then you are free to do so. Describe how your industry has been affected over the twenty years during which the provisions of NAFTA have been phased in. Focus on the trade between Mexico and/or Canada. Also, although the new USMCA is very similar to NAFTA in most respects, feel free to comment on how any new provisions in the USMCA will help or hurt your chosen industry.
