Chapter One emphasizes several key economic questions: what, how, and for whom? The governor, legislature, and voters constantly grapple with those questions as well when designing the state budget. Since Cerro Coso College is located in California, considering some options to the state’s finances might be useful.

Pretend that you are the governor of California. What budget ideas would you propose?

Think in terms of numbers: how much will your programs cost if enacted? How much will the programs cost if they are not enacted? If proposing tax cuts, how much revenue will be lost? How much would a tax cut provide to an individual?

Remember that as the elected governor, you have pledged to represent the interests of all of the state’s residents.
