Assignment Overview
Before studying issues in education and others’ educational experiences more deeply, it is important to examine how your own experiences shape your identity and behaviors as a learner. Paper 1 is a reflective essay on your educational journey prior to beginning college/post-secondary education (also known as “K-12”, or kindergarten through grade 12 in the U.S.).
As you prepare to complete Paper 1, please reflect on your relationships with teachers, peers, curricula, school policies, etc. and identify situations that had a major impact on you during this time. Reflect on who was involved; what forces were at play in how the situations played out; and how the situations impacted you.
Instructions:
Describe a minimum of two school-based experiences that have impacted your identity as an individual and as a learner. These experiences can be “negative”, “positive”, or “neutral” in nature. Be sure to describe the experience and also explain how and/or why it has left a lasting impact on you.
Before describing the events, please provide contextual details about your individual background (e.g., race, ethnicity, language(s) spoken, socioeconomics/social class, family context, and/or other demographic factors); your school and neighborhood/community/town or city; cultural/national context, etc.
