Emergency medical dispatch (EMD) programs are designed to allow call takers to determine what resources are most appropriate for initial dispatch based on the responses to preassigned questions by initial complaint. Each EMD program has its own tools and algorithms to determine the primary problem and appropriate response. However, the actual response make-up (advanced versus basic life support, use of first responders, etc.) is pre-determined by a medical director so the communications specialist is not guessing, and there is consistency. Do you think the general community has identified how this works and would alter the complaint or answer the questions differently to trigger a faster, more advanced response? Explain why or why not.
