One of the values of a symbol is that it allows a poet to convey a lot ofmeaning in very few words, because a symbol suggests meanings beyond itsliteral sense.  This week, we are going to learn about symbols bydemonstrating how notto go about interpreting them.
Take a relatively simple and straightforward poems (such as William CarlosWilliams’ “The Red Wheelbarrow” or “This Is Just to Say” or”The Great Figure”) and write a burlesque critical interpretation ofit.  Claim to discover symbols the poem doesn’t contain. While runningwild with your “reading into” the poem, don’t invent anything thatyou can’t somehow support from the text of the poem itself.
