Make a list of one of the following: (1) your hobbies OR (2) things you find interesting about your family or community. Your list should include no less than five separate items. For each of the five items listed, note at least two specific questions about each item on your list that you would like to have answered. Finally, craft a separate paragraph for at least four of the items on your list. In the paragraphs, reflect on the kinds of primary research or archives you might use in order to learn more about the items/questions on your list. (see example below)

Ex.:

Hobbies

  • Gaming
    • How can online gaming be used to help introverts?
    • What are the affects on specific types of games on study skills (platforms, open worlds/sandboxes, survivals, shooters, etc)?

To address these questions, I would likely need to observe a variety of online gamers over the course of several gaming "sessions." I would also likely need to survey gamers in order to address either question. I would look to educational databases for scholarly articles (ex. ProQuest, Pop Culture Universe, and jstore), but I’m not sure how useful archives would be for these questions.

  • Comics
    • What makes a film adaptation successful?
    • How do comic reflect contemporary social issues?

To address these questions, I would likely need to observe a variety of comic book films and their print counterparts. I would also likely need to survey or interview several comics fans. I would look to educational databases for scholarly articles (ex. ProQuest, Pop Culture Universe, Graphic Novels Core Collection, and jstore), but I’m not sure how useful archives would be for these questions. I would also need to observe a series of popular critics on a number of specific films and books to better understand what makes them successful and how important (if at all) social issues are to the fans/critics.

  • Baking
    • How do home bakers prepare for professional competitions?
    • How does a person become a professional baker (i.e. best schools, locations, and chefs to study with)?

To address these questions, I would likely need to observe a variety of baking competitions and conventions. I think it would also be useful to research some of the top bakers in the world and see where they studied and with whom. I don’t think surveys woul dbe very helpful, but interviews would give me specific information that I can’t get through scholarship and general observation.

  • Travel
    • How does tourism impact coastal environments?
    • How does travel affect a person’s general well-being?

To address these questions, I would likely need to observe a variety of tourist spots (local beaches would work; I could also wander around Key West for a weekend). I would also likely need to survey vacationers in order to address the second question; I think the first question is better suited to interviews though. Blogs (which are kind of like archives, right?) such as The Everygirl and Travel Break offer travel journals that might be a good start to better understanding the personal impact travel experiences can have. I could also look into specific eco-archives to see if pattern issues are present for specific coastal regions.

  • Gardening
    • What are the personal benefits to gardening?
    • How can a person begin developing a sustainable system (permaculture)?
