The Book that I am reading is “Into Thin Air”

Employing the knowledge you’ve gained in this class about engaging and descriptive narrative writing and utilizing the skills you’ve learned about writing academic essays, write an argument essay, with a counter-argument and refutation, or “turn-back,” (see the Week 10 Module) , convincing future students to read or avoid your chosen book from the list of options provided for English 120.

What to Write about

  • When preparing what to write about, consider what you’ve learned this semester: masterful narrative writing often . . .
    • Paints a vivid picture in the reader’s mind through the use of sensory imagery
    • Uses rhetorical devices (Week 4 Module) like alliteration, allusion, short powerful sentences, anaphora (purposeful repetition of words at the beginning of sentences), rhetorical questions, monologue/dialogue, etc. to engage readers (This point MUST be covered in one of the body paragraphs.)
    • Includes colorful and descriptive language (Week 14 Module)
    • Brings people/characters to life with vivid descriptions and believable dialogue (or monologue)
    • Weaves poignant scenes and memorable lines into the narrative
    • Teaches us life lessons about the human experience

You could write your body paragraphs about any of the suggested points listed above. Choose at least three points to cover, but at least one body paragraph MUST address the use of rhetorical/literary devices covered in our class.

Directions

Choose passages from a variety of places in the book to demonstrate that you’ve read the entire book, and cite the passages in proper MLA formatting.

  • 15 points will be deducted if you don’t cite page numbers.
  • 15 points will be deducted if you don’t include passages from a variety to places throughout the book, demonstrating that you’ve read all of it.

NOTE: At least one body paragraph MUST address the use of rhetorical/literary devices covered in our online class.

This essay should have at least 5 paragraphs total.

  • Include . . .
    • a clear introduction with a hood, background information, and a clear thesis/argument,
    • body paragraphs with clear topic sentences and quoted evidence from the book that supports the topic sentences (See Incorporating Quoted Passages–Step-by-Step in the Week 3 Module)
    • counter-argument with a turn back, or refutation (highlight this)
  • Using skills practiced throughout the semester, write three body paragraphs with at least two quoted passages in each paragraph (at least six quoted passages total).  Ill expect to read well-developed context before the quoted passages and thorough explanations/analysis after them.
  • Whenever possible “quote from the quote” when analyzing and explaining quoted passages.
  • Use MLA formatting when identifying your paper, quoting and citing the pages in your chosen book, and including a Works Cited page.
  • Before submitting your essay, proofread carefully.
