Reread Polonius’s advice to Laertes Act 1, Scene 3, lines 65-86. Then, read Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If.” Compare the advice between these two poems, and write the following:

  • Paragraph 1: What similarities do you see? (Don’t forget to name both texts and authors on the first mention. After that, refer to authors by their last names.)
  • Paragraph 2: What differences?
  • Paragraph 3: Which speech do you think offers better, more useful guidance?

  • MLA header
  • Follow the 20 Style Guidelines
  • Be specific in your connection, including incorporating brief quotes from each text with proper MLA citations.
    • For a poem, a citation includes the line number in this format: (Kipling l. 4) or (Kipling ll. 6-9).
    • For Shakespeare, a citation includes the act, scene, and line number(s) in this format (Shakespeare 2.3.45-47).
    • For clarity, you’ll use the author’s name in every citation because you are referring to two different texts throughout your piece.
