Essay Question/Topic: Ethical Theory and Applied Issues–you can pick the ethical issue for Part 4

Outline with Prompts:

Introduction. make sure that this follows the philosophical model in the “How to” resource with topic, thesis, preview.

Part 1Metaethics

Briefly explain what is metaethics. Present the objectivism (sometimes called “realism” or “absolutism”) v. relativism (sometimes called “subjectivism”) debate. Take a look at the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy (“Metaethics” section 3.a Metaphysical Issues: Objectivism and Relativism) as well as the Ellin article. The goal is to present the basic/broad positions with examples.Do all of this in your own words. I recommend at least a paragraph each for each major position.

With an additional paragraph address both the strengths and weaknesses of each side. This is not the place to give your personal opinion. This comes later.

Part 2A Normative Theory

First, briefly explain how normative ethics differs from metaethics. Second, present one of the major normative theories such as duty/deontology (“rules” or “rights”), consequentialism (“consequences” or “results”), virtue ethics (“character” or “habits”), feminine ethics of care (“relationships,” “compassion,” etc.)Utilize the course resources (see Topic 2 in syllabus) to identify which normative theory to present. You may want to use the normative theory that you think will be most effective in arguing your case for the moral issue in Part 4. Give an example of a philosopher who subscribes to the normative theory (Mill, for example, develops Utilitarianism which is a type of consequentialism).Third, discuss at least one potential strength and one potential weaknesses of your chosen normative approach.

Part 3My Own Moral Code

This is a critical section of the paper, so don’t cut it short. Use several paragraphs.

First, do a self assessment: “Know Thyself.” Consider your own ethical background/thinking and the principles or people that inform it.What are the sources (metaethics) that grounded your morality and what were the the ways (normative ethics) that determined right and wrong–before you ever took this class? For example, were you raised more with relativist or objectivist views or taught to obey the Ten Commandments or Golden Rule?

Second, where are you now in terms metaethics and normative theory? For example, are you an objectivist/relativist and which normative theories do you tend to employ? Explain and support your position with arguments.

Part 4

Articulate and argue for a position on an ethical issue of your interest. Present both general sides of the issue.

Explain your metaethical position and normative approach for addressing the ethical issue. For example, with respect to poverty you may believe that all humans have the right to not go hungry and you employ a consequentialist approach in evaluating which charities or countries to direct your money. Or you may be a cultural relativist that believes that saving the whales or trees is important, but only in your culture.

Explain and justify in several paragraphs.

Conclusion–make sure that this follows the philosophical model in the “How to” resource

The Topic I thought was best was drug addiction and abuse
