Description:

A research paper’s overall structure consists of three major sections: 1) An Introduction that provides a thesis statement or otherwise orients the reader toward a major claim 2) body paragraphs that break down the thesis in to specific areas and treat each area in detail, and 3) a conclusion that establishes a claim based on the information in the body paragraphs.

A research paper presents information, in the form of arguments. Bear in mind that this does not necessarily mean disputation or a verbal contest. It means that the information is presented in an organized manner in which a series of preliminary statements (premises) bolster the degree of certainty of the final statement (conclusion).

Example of an Argument:

Everyone says that food contains calories. But food does not contain calories. A Calorie is a unit of heat measurement. One calorie is equal to the amount of energy required to raise one gram of water, by one degree Celsius, at one atmosphere. The only thing that food is comprised of are molecules, which are in turn comprised of the elements represented on the Periodic Table. To say that milk contains calories is silly. Milk contains calcium, hydrogen, oxygen, and lactose which has the chemical formula C12H22O11. If people paid more attention in school, and really tried to learn science, and apply it to understanding the way things actually are, then no one would claim that food contains calories.

*Note that the above argument consists mainly of declarative sentences leading up to the final statement, which is a conditional statement.
