SE203: Exercise Physiology
Coursework essay
Your coursework consists of a 2500-word case study discussing the physiology of a particular sport. It is designed to test your understanding of key concepts in exercise physiology, ability to locate relevant scientific literature and ability to formulate/present arguments in writing. It is worth 70% of the total module grade.
You must choose one of the athletes listed below for your case study. Choosing a sport not listed will result in failure of the assignment. Furthermore, this is a case study of a sport in general and not on a specific athlete, i.e. if choosing the tennis player, do not write 2500 words on Roger Federer. The sports to choose from are:
• Road cyclist competing in a 100-mile time-trial
• 100m sprinter
• Rugby front-row player (i.e. props or hooker)
• Tennis player
• Winter biathlete
A separate document on Moodle lists some useful resources for each of the sports.
In your essay, with reference to the scientific literature, you should describe and explain the acute physiological responses to your chosen sport and discuss the chronic adaptations as a result of training in the sport. Your discussion should include: the energy systems, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, and muscular system.
Good essays will:
• Include an introductory paragraph that outlines the topic, chosen sport, purpose and structure of the essay
• Discuss the physiological responses that occur pre-event, and at the start, middle and end of the event
• Focus on the physiological responses to the event rather than basic descriptions of underlying physiology
• Explain how the chronic adaptations to training alter the acute responses and enhance performance
• Focus on the physiology underlying chronic adaptations rather than the exact training programs athletes use
• Compare either pre- to post-training or differences between trained and untrained individuals
• Cover all relevant physiological systems in a logical manner
• Include a concluding paragraph that summaries the main points in relation to the purpose of the essay
• Contain at least 20 references to scientific papers which are correctly formatted in the Vancouver style (see Moodle for guidelines)
