The purpose of this assignment is to explore real scientific data from the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) (Links to an external site.), and use that data to make inferences about rates of seafloor spreading. In this assignment, you will use data about marine sediments, sitting atop basalt oceanic crust, to understand how those sediments can tell us about plate motions.
Skills: This assignment will help you practice using oceanographic data to develop skills in graphical interpretation, data analysis, problem-solving, mathematics, and written communication.
Knowledge: Through this assignment, you will be able to describe how real data collected from the Deep Sea Drilling Project provides evidence of seafloor spreading. You will also gain an understanding of why sediment that settles on mid-oceans ridges varies in age with distance from the ridge.
