Mini-Essay Assignment #1: Exploring Topic Choices

Points Possible: 9 points

Instructions: To choose a topic for your paper, reference the Research Topic options listed in your course syllabus. Among the topic choices available, choose the three that you find most appealing/interesting/relatable to you. Write a 3-5 page critical analysis paper wherein you critically assess the following about your chosen three topics:

  • How knowledgeable you are about the topics
  • Questions you may have about the topics
  • Current social issues regarding the topics

The purpose of this paper is to allow you to critically evaluate these topic choices. It is important that whatever topic choice you eventually land is

  • one where you can ask a question of that you genuinely want to find the answer to; and
  • one that you know enough about where you are not starting a research from scratch.

Once youve written your Exploring Topic Choices paper, you will then continue the invention process by identifying a focus for your paper. This will be done in class and you will then have to create your research questions.

A Research Question is a question that a research sets out to answer. It is important that in crafting your research question you follow the following guide:

  • DO NOT ask a question that you already know the answer to.
  • Because the primary rhetorical approach that we are learning in this class is argumentative writing, DO NOT ask a question that is not arguable.

Instead,

  • Ask a question that you want to know the answer to
  • Ask a question whose potential answer can resolve existing social issues
  • Ask a question that society has been avoiding

Once you have identified your research question, begin the following:

  • Brainstorming the important questions that are related to the question that you are asking.
  • Compiling a list of things that you already know about your research question facts and anecdotes and how you know them.
  • Things that your question assumes to be true.
  • Things that society assumes about your research question (break down the question into key concepts).

Begin crafting your first draft of your introduction paper.
