For your final assignment, you will address our four major settings of focus for the application of behavior modification strategies:
  • Self-management: Impacting the frequency of our own behaviors or establishing new behaviors
    • For example, habits to reduce or increase such as exercise, smoking, etc.
  • Family: Impacting the frequency of behaviors or establishing new behaviors within the family
    • Often emergent in parent-child relationships with an emphasis on discipline, reinforcement, etc., but can be observed across family relationships—for instance, encouraging a spouse to communicate more frequently or help out with household chores
  • Workplace: Impacting frequency of behaviors or establishing new behaviors within workplace culture
    • For instance, supporting the development of positive behaviors in employees (e.g., arriving to work on time)
  • Culture: Impacting frequency of behaviors or establishing new behaviors within a culture
    • Think “big picture”—how does the justice system attempt to reduce problem behaviors and reinforce positive ones? Diversity across cultures for social expectations can also influence behaviors in this setting.
In Session 4, you identified four peer-reviewed (located below), academic journal articles about behavior modification within each setting. Upon receiving confirmation from your instructor that your articles were sufficient options, you will be using these articles to write your final paper. Your paper will have an introduction, conclusion, and four main sections for the four articles.
Complete the following in your paper:
  • Include a brief summary of each article’s main ideas.
  • For each article, evaluate the intervention described in the journal article for effectiveness based on the principles of behavior modification that you have learned in this course. Be sure to include textbook terms, theories, and models to support your descriptions.
  • For the first article related to self-management, identify the treatment or intervention applied in the article for human behavior modification and connect this to your personal experience or self-management. How might this intervention or a similar one be effective for you in an area of problem behavior in the past or present?
  • For the second article related to family, identify the treatment or intervention applied in the article for human behavior modification and connect this to your personal experiences or observations with family. How might this intervention or a similar one be effective for your family or the family of someone you know?
  • For the third article related to workplace, identify the treatment or intervention applied for human behavior modification and connect this to your personal experiences or observations in a workplace. How might this intervention or a similar one be effective in your workplace or in the workplace of someone you know?
  • For the fourth article related to culture, identify the treatment or intervention applied for human behavior modification with relevance to a cultural practice. In what other diverse cultures or situations might this intervention be effective? Consider your own cultural experiences or those of someone you know. You may also research diverse cultures to identify an area of application. Analyze each article using a biblical lens and integrate ideas from the course text (Miltenberger, 2016) and from scripture to support your statements.
End your assignment with a conclusion addressing the following (at least one page in length):
  • Reflect on this course as a whole. Which concepts emerge in your mind when you consider applications of behavioral psychology to self, family, workplace, and culture after having taken this course? Please provide an example of each as well as connections to relevant Scriptures.
You will cite four peer-reviewed academic journal articles (one for each setting), the course text (Miltenberger, 2016), and Scripture. Feel free to include additional sources to support as necessary. Your submission should be six to seven pages long in APA format.
