Formal essay structure: your paper should contain a brief formal introduction (stating your topic and thesis statement), a series of “body” paragraphs supporting your argument, and a brief conclusion. Secondary-sources are unnecessary.

MLA Formatting:
• General Guidelines (Your name, etc.) (link)
• Title (link)
• In-text Citations (link)
• Works Cited page (link)
o What if the text I choose to discuss is part of an ICON course pack, and I don’t know its original source? Find an edition of the text online. Otherwise, do your best to include as much information as you have available to you.

Like your first and second essays, this assignment is meant to assess close-reading and analytic skills. It should be thoughtfully organized and argumentative. Notice, however, that these prompts are much more open-ended by contrast with Essays #1 and #2. This means you’ll have to do more work to develop an original thesis statement.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask your section instructors.

PROMPTS
Answer one of the following.

1. Several works of contemporary literature resist narrative closure. Why? Compare Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot and one other text.

2. Discuss musical influences in two contemporary poems. For instance, you might discuss the influence of reggae on Linton Kwesi Johnson’s poetry or hip hop’s influence on Spoken Word.

3. Examine how two contemporary poets challenge the received notion of “standard” or “proper” English.

4. The South African author J.M. Coetzee wrote Waiting for the Barbarians at the height of Apartheid, yet his novel, a meditation on empire, features no sustained historical reference either to his own country or to past empires? Why?

5. How do contemporary authors depict systems of oppression? Compare two authors. (Note: this is a very expansive question. You’ll want to refine your answer considerably).

6. Transhistorical question: answer one of the previous questions, but instead compare a contemporary work with a pre-twentieth century text.

Examples: for question #2, you might choose to compare an African American spiritual with a Spoken Word text. You could do the same for question #3. For question #5, you might discuss systems of (racial) oppression in Nnedi Okorafor’s Binti and Olaudah Equiano’s The Interesting Narrative. There are, of course, many more possibilities.
