All Discussion Forums require an initial thread post of not less than 350 words during the first week the Forum is open, and a response of not less than 250 words to a classmates post during the second week the Forum is open.

Initial thread post (post first week Forum is open). The first line in the initial thread post must state the topic title and prompt selected for the post thread. With a minimum of 350 words, be sure to address all aspects of the chosen prompt; dont just regurgitate what is in the textresearch the topic on the internet and in the FAU electronic libraries, and include an APA-compliant reference/citation. FORUM I INSTRUCTIONS

UNCONSCIOUS THOUGHT

The text [CH 3] presents research by Keith Payne (2001) that investigated prejudice by priming participants with race before they had to quickly identify an image of a tool or a gun; participants were significantly more likely to misidentify a tool as a gun when it was preceded by a black face than when it was preceded by a white face. This study measured bias at a level below consciousness, using the Implicit Association Test (IAT) paradigm.  Are YOU biased when it comes to race, religion, ageetc., etc., etc.? You might be surprised! Go to  and take at least one IAT demonstration test. After taking an IAT, learn what you can on the internet or in the FAU electronic libraries about unconscious thought, the IAT, and why we should understand (and care about) what goes on below the level of consciousness.

After taking an IAT and further investigating the topic, choose ONE of the prompts below for your Forum topic (see the General Discussion Forum Instructions, and the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric, for a complete understanding of what is expected and how your Forum participation will be assessed).

  • THE IAT AND BIAS. What exactly is the test measuring? Explain why the finding that a bias exists does not necessarily mean that an individual is prejudiced. Make sure to discuss when an unconscious bias might affect conscious thoughts, feelings and behaviors and when it would not. Give examples, if necessary, to make the explanation readily understandable.
  • IAT CONFOUNDS. How do the test creators control for possible confounds such as handedness or order of presentation (be specific as to how these might confound results and why they cannot, given the way the test is structured)?
  • IAT vs. ITEM RESPONSE. The researchers conduct the IAT and also ask certain questions for conscious response. How do knowledge gained from the IAT test and knowledge gained by asking questions differ? Use examples from the IAT you took in your explanation.
  • ANOTHER WAY TO MEASURE UNCONSCIOUS THOUGHT. Describe another method that you believe might be able to assess unconscious thought. Explain how/why the proposed method would likely be reliable and valid (make sure you know what these terms mean, and anticipate possible arguments against your method in your discussion!).
  • CONTRASTING CONSCIOUS AND UNCONSCIOUS THOUGHT. Explain the differences between unconscious thought and conscious thought (make sure to cover intentionality, energy requirements, awareness, and masking). Also discuss schemas, and explain how schemas are related to both conscious and unconscious thought (be sure to include discussion on the ultimate effect of unconscious content on conscious thoughts, feelings and behaviors).
  • STUDENT CHOICE. Start a conversation on concept related to unconscious thought or the measurement of unconscious thought and how that concept is related to another psychological phenomenon. Students who choose to do this MUST include at least TWO (not one) credible citations/references that support the new topic introduced, to earn Credibility points in the grading rubric.
