Personal Response Essay

 

Goals of this assignment: 

• to practice close reading of, and reflection on, primary source; 
• to connect written knowledge with experiential knowledge;
• to discuss the relevance of literature to our lives and the ways in which it may an effective form of communication; 
• to organize an expository essay with clarity, including introduction, body of essay, and conclusion/s.

Assignment Description and Process:

 

Re-read the poems that you have been assigned so farAs you re-read, notice the poems which you have the strongest emotional response to and why. You may want to consult any earlier notes to see if this is a similar reaction to the one you had when you first read it.

 

Your task is to write 2 page personal response essay in which you describe your reaction to the reading, what you admire about it in regards to content and form, what it made you feel and think of,

and the reasons why you think it had an emotional impact on you,and why it may be relevant to others of your generation.

 

As you prepare your outline for this paper think of the following structure:

 

1. In your first paragraph, include thesis statement that affirms the value of your chosen text as you see it, then work your way explaining what it in makes it valuableYour intro paragraph willinclude your response to questions such as, how does the text make me feel as a reader? What does it make me think about in my own personal and/or social life? Make sure to be clear about the context in which the text was written (most likely not ours!by providing minimal background information about its composition/ publication circumstances and its author.

 

2. In they body of your essay, as you explain the value of this textmake sure to identify what you think is/are its unique features in terms of approach to certain themes (show how you get to identify thosethemes)For instance, the poem may offer a unique portrayal of Latino/a identity (or other), as it incorporates other central themes(race, ethnic, social, gender identities, for instance, or class, sexuality, language, culture, migration, public space, etc.). 

 

3. It is important to also identify the tonethe viewpoint and approachof the piece and analyze, as well as at least three poetic devices (metaphor repetition, contrast/antithesis, alliteration…) used to convey the text’s message. What specific formal features provoked a particular effect on you as a reader? 

 

4. Finally, wrap up your paper summarizing the key attributes of the poem, its overall message, and a reflection on why the text may be relevant to readers today.  Is there anything that we can learn from it as we address our many issues and concerns today?

Remember to provide bibliographic reference (‘Works Cited’ page) and in-text citations when you use direct quotes. Follow MLA Formatting and Citation Style throughout.
