Now is the time to put all that hard work you did in our assignments into the final essay.
The final essay is an opportunity for students to apply what they have learned from the book, and
the movies we have seen into a formal argument about how films operate aesthetically and the
meaning(s) they generate.
Please read the following instructions thoroughly and carefully. If you are uncertain about any
part, feel free to contact me.
GENERAL NOTES: ALL papers should have titles centered and in bold (be creative!), names
on the upper left corner, and the document should be in 12pt font, Times New Roman.
STEP ONE: Pick a film we have seen, a movie that a particular chapter mentions in our book, or
a different movie from a director we have covered in class. For example. If you wish to discuss
Goodfellas more in depth, please do! Or you wish to discuss Citizen Kane, a film that the book
concentrates on, that’s fine too, or you wish to discover a new film from Spike Lee’s oeuvre,
please, I would love to read more about Spike Lee’s other films.
STEP TWO: After you pick your film, I want you to go back and apply what we have learn from
a particular chapter and implement the terms that are appropriate to your argument. For instance,
you wish to talk about the Cinematography of Rashomon, and what it means both to the
characters’ psychological state, please I welcome that. Remember, I’m just giving you a very,
and I mean, a very broad topic for an essay, but this is the type of ideas you should be generating
for a final essay. Remember, the more specific you are, the better your paper is going to be. It’s
that simple.
STEP THREE: Generate a Thesis Statement. After you watch your movie, and your chosen
chapter, I want you to generate a two to three sentence thesis. I will give you tips to make sure
you understand and grasp what the thesis statement is and how it functions. This is very
important to have your thesis down. Afterall, your paper hinges upon this very facet. Without a
thesis, your paper is just a collection of ideas that float and will have no solid grounding.
PLEASE NOTE: I want everyone to email me your thesis statement by Friday, December 10th.
You will be getting points and my feedback toward how you should proceed. Remember, these
are just suggestions. Ultimately, it’s up to you what your paper should be about.
STEP FOUR: After your thesis, write four to five pages. No more than five pages, please!
Remember, writing is re–writing. Make sure you go back, check for grammar, punctuation,
passive sentences, all these elements can be corrected in Word. I cannot stress this enough that
writing is a process. If you plan, you will have no problem submitting this assignment on time.
