• Recreate a famous painting with a scene from ancient Greek mythology along the lines of the Getty Challenge (https://blogs.getty.edu/iris/getty-artworks-recreated-withhousehold-items-by-creative-geniuses-the-world-over/ N.B. the examples here are not from Greek myth – you should make sure that you choose a painting that represents a scene from Greek myth. The best recreations are those that use ordinary objects, and from which the original painting is instantly recognizable). You can do the project individually (with the help for the recreation of the image from friends if you need different people in the image) or collaboratively with other students on the course. Write an accompanying short paper including information about the original painting, the myth that it represents, and comparing it to other representations of that myth (ancient and/or modern). Use the Anthology to help you, and/or your TA or Professor Morales if you need help finding sources. Be sensible – no nudity etc – your professor is a sensitive soul. If you do this project individually write between 600 and 800 words. If you do it collaboratively, divide up the paper into sections, write between 600 and 800 words each, and indicate who is responsible for each section. • Write a close analysis of an ancient hero, heroine, or deity. Choose a figure from ancient mythology that you want to examine more closely. Using the index to help you, read 3-6 ancient texts about that figure in the Anthology of Classical Myth. Compare and contrast the different representations of the character. Can we account for the differences? For example, does the genre of the work, and/or the writer’s political or philosophical goals determine how a character is represented? Give specific, short, illustrations from the texts to illustrate your arguments and write between 1600-2000 words.
