This assignment has 3 steps, and should be a total length of ~250 words, as usual. Feel free to look up lyrics on genius.com, and this summary of Hadestown on Wikipedia might be helpful, if you find yourself confused. This is due by 11:59pm Friday January 28th.
1) Carefully read the Homeric Hymn to Demeter (HHD) on pages 169-178 of the Anthology of Classical Myth, especially sections 2a, 2d, 2e, 2f
2) Listen to 1 song from each of the 3 pairings below from the musical Hadestown. These are available on Spotify, Youtube, Pandora, Amazon Music, and most other streaming services — you will listen to a total of 3 songs, which should be about 15 minutes.
• Either Livin’ it Up on Top (usually Track 6) or Our Lady of the Underground (usually Track 21)
• Either Way Down Hadestown (usually Track 9) or Chant (usually Track 12)
• Either How Long? (usually Track 29) or Epic III (usually Track 31)
3) In ~250 words, analyze how both works interpret Persephone (and, if you wish, Hades and Demeter). Be sure to consider how the musical themes/poetic devices (e.g. repeated lines/names/musical themes, tone, structure, speaker) of the HHD and your chosen song create that interpretation. Discuss what we can learn from these two versions of the story about how perspective can change a myth.

• How does centering a different character (Demeter in HHD, Persephone and Hades in Hadestown) impact our understanding of the myth?
• Why do you think Anaïs Mitchell, the writer of Hadestown, interpreted the story of Persephone in the way she did?
• How do we see Demeter in Hadestown? Does she factor into the story explicitly, implicitly, or at all?
• What do both versions of the story have to say about love? What about nature, power, or agency?
