I’ve chosen to have you read Lorraine Hansberry’s ground-breaking play A Raisin in the Sun not only for its timely topics and relevance, but also because of its abundance of literary elements. In addition to the play, I’ve asked you to read excerpts from some cultural and historical contextual texts. These documents shed light on some of the themes and topics referenced or implied in Hansberry’s text.
For this week’s discussion board post, I want you to draw connections between the play (including its characters, plot, and arguments) and those documents.

Answer at least two of the following questions:
1. In what way is A Raisin in the Sun a commentary on the American Dream (the idea that every generation does better than the one before and can have a chance at success, wealth, and prosperity)? Consider what the dreams of the Younger family are. What does each of them want? Why? Do they succeed by the end of the play? Use textual references with citations as your support.
2. With drama, setting becomes as important as character at times. This is true for Hansberry’s play. In what way does the setting (time, place, location, et cetera) reflect the conflict and/or message of the play? Identify at least three specific examples in the text and cite them appropriately.
3. Which of the following topics do you think leads to the most important message of the play: Family, Gender, Race, Economics, or Identity? What is the argument being made in the play about that topic? Use at least three textual references with citations in your answer.
4. In her setting notes for the play, Hansberry says “the action of the play is set in Chicago’s Southside, sometime between World War II [1945] and the present” (1597). This means that the play could be set in 2020. In what ways is this play still relevant? Use at least three textual references with citations in your answer.
