In proper MLA and paper format, write a full essay of 1000 – 1500 words making an evidence-based argument using the following thesis statement:

Having a fixed mindset has a negative effect on a person’s self-image, contributing to lower levels of motivation and achievement.

You can explore this thesis in any way that you’d like as long as the focus is on pointing ways that a fixed mindset leads to lower motivation and achievement because of how people see themselves. It is important that the effects on a person’s self-image is explored. The evidence you use will not always point directly to self-image, so you may need to describe how you are interpreting self-image perceptions from what you’re reading in the evidence. You must also link those negative self-views to lower motivation and achievement.

The lens of this thesis is the negative effects on a person’s self-image that a fixed mindset has.

The basis for your argument (the reason this matters) is that the negative self-image caused by the fixed mindset contributes to lower levels of motivation and achievement.

Each point that you make should involve some component of negative self-image resulting in lower motivation and/or achievement. Keep your argument focused to these points. There is a lot that can be said about mindsets, achievement, motivation in general, but ask yourself “does it relate to a fixed mindset causing negative self-image and impacting motivation and achievement?” If not, it does not belong in this research paper.

This is a research paper, which means you are using facts that you find in the research to support all of your claims. This is different from a position paper, in that it is not asking you to argue your position or point of view of one side of an argument. You don’t need a counterargument. The purpose of a research paper is to prove something through factual evidence. This evidence is gathered through reputable sources (articles, other research, experts, etc.). Therefore, the focus of the points you make is in the sources. Your paragraphs should still consist of a MEAL, and they should still be composed mostly of your own interpretation and explanation, but be sure you are interpreting what the evidence is stating about your thesis and how the evidence supports your claims. You want to focus more on the use of logos and ethos in a research paper. It is very important that you maintain an objective outsider voice and point of view. Rely on the research to help make your argument. Do not generalize, do not assume, and do not make a claim that can’t be supported in one of the following sources:

You must use AT LEAST THREE of the following sources in your paper, but you may (and are encouraged) to use more than three. The sources you are permitted to use are:

  • Any other source that we have covered for this class
  • Any material found in the textbook

Requirements:

  • Proper MLA formatting
  • Citations and evidence from at least three sources provided (ONLY use what is provided)
  • 1000 – 1500 words (no more, no less, edit carefully)
  • All claims must be evidence-based
  • All standard assignment and essay criteria apply
