” Healthcare delivery is ever more complex and in order to  effectively improve outcomes,  great leaders are crucial.  The question is : are leaders born or made?  There could be arguments for either position. Although one may have innate aptitude to lead, a leader can also be cultivated. Leadership development models convey the idea that leadership is not  confined to a selected few but is attainable to all (Fealy et al, 2011).  As such, leadership models are important in providing  a framework  to facilitate the developments of leaders. There are different leadership development models that delve into leadership and the development of leaders. For  the purpose of this discussion,  The Health  Leadership Competency model will be examined.

The Health Administration Leadership competency Model was developed as  a result of interviews with people at the executive level in healthcare organizations. Although the model does not define a leader it offers competencies that a successful leader must possess. Leadership development happens on the job (Garman, 2010). These competencies are divided into three sections: transformation, Execution and people. There are 26 competencies (Garman, 2010). Examples of the three domains are as follows: charting the course which involves  having competencies to be flexible to adaptable to  in order to implement long-term planning, the leader must have a vision.: long term planning (Garman, 2010)A leader must inspire others to commitment: this involves others to be invested at  an emotional level (Garman, 2010).The intersectionality of Execution  and People involves the development of work relationships- this is the ability to bring out the best in employee (Garman, 2010)

Great leaders are needed to improve outcomes  within health care organizations. Implementing any method or model to an organization can bring challenges. There can be barriers to implementing  any leadership development model. One of the barriers can be gender stereotypes. As leaders are often portrayed as heroes with masculine traits, some of the traits that may admired in men may be seen as abrasive, arrogant or self promoting in a woman (Schweiger et al. 2020, p414). Another  barrier lies  within the individuals.  This barrier can be two-fold.  The role of  a leader requires that the position  is visible which allows for role modeling. However, if there is  a perception of lack of competence that can lead to lack of engagement (Fealy et al, 2011). Another barrier is the application of the knowledge to real-life situations. Leadership trainees may have difficulty applying what is being learned.

 Great leaders are important for any organization to be successful. In spite of the possible  barriers, it is important to invest in developing leadership characteristics in all employees.  Giving employees the support that they need to flourish can inspire them to commit and to model the behaviors seen to become in turn great leaders. “
