Background: This course provides an introduction to the field of Health Information Management, including: a history of the profession, professional organizations, accreditation standards, and the functions, content and structure of the health record.
PROJECT: You will be required to write a minimum of 4 page informative paper discussing various aspect of the health record (excluding reference, cover page, and abstract).
Content (Student Learning Objective):
Purpose and uses of the health record and relate each to HIM functions, provide information on electronic, hybrid, and paper-based records, distinguish between the advantages and disadvantages of each, Discuss how the MPI relates to patient records, differentiate between the different types of numbering systems and positives and negative aspects of each. Describe 2 different datasets and core measures; including the type of record affected and the different between the medical record documentation (i.e. home health versus ambulatory setting).
Appendix: Students must provide a one appendix (not included in page count) on how to determine calculations of linear filing inches required for paper charts, as well as provide an example of the calculation.
Additional guidance: APA format, 4 total pages (not including cover page, reference page, and appendix), 4 total resources (scholarly, reputable, and academic sources will be accepted only). Paper should utilize paraphrasing, quotations, and original thought to expand on an idea. Late projects will not be accepted.
