Essay Question

Your answer to the question below should be based ONLY on information presented in Eric Foner’s Give Me Liberty! (Chapters 22-25), Dr. McIntyre’s Monday Morning Announcements, and the documentary, At the River I Stand.

Answer the following question in a 750- to 1,000-word essay (roughly 3 to 4 pages, double-spaced):

When Dr. McIntyre studied the Civil Rights Movement in high school and in college many, many years ago, it was generally defined as a movement that was focused only on the issues of voting rights and segregation in the South.  He was taught that the movement began in 1954 with the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case that ruled segregated schools to be unconstitutional, and ended in 1965 following passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (outlawing segregation in public places) and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (outlawing disfranchisement laws). Considering the material presented in this course, is this still an adequate way to understand or define the Civil Rights/Black Freedom Movement?

To answer this question, you should consider only the following three events in your essay:

• the 1941 March on Washington

• the 1963 March on Washington

• the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers’ strike.

For each event, you should:

1. explain what the demands or goals of the event were.

2. consider what the event tells us about whether the Civil Rights/Black Freedom Movement was only a southern movement

3. consider what the event tells us about whether the Civil Rights/Black Freedom Movement was concerned only with segregation laws and disfranchisement laws.

4. consider what the event tells us about whether the Civil Rights/Black Freedom Movement began in 1954 and ended in 1965?

Good essays will:

• begin with an introductory paragraph that contains a thesis statement that provides your central argument for the essay (i. e. your answer to the essay question).

• contain one or two paragraphs on each of the above three events that address the four questions above.

• end with a conclusion that shows the reader how you have supported your thesis statement throughout the essay.

Essay Points:

I will evaluate your paper using a rubric with the following point values:

Thesis statement:  10 points

1941 March on Washington:  30 points

1963 March on Washington:  30 points

1968 Memphis sanitation workers’ strike:  30 points

Total:  100 points

Essay Rules

• Your essay should be 750 to 1,000 words. There is a 10-point penalty for writing more than 1,000 words.  Essays shorter than 750 words will not be penalized for length, but are unlikely to have answered the question adequately.

• Your essay should be double-spaced with one-inch margins.

• Your essay should use proper grammar and should avoid use of first person.

• Your essay should make use ONLY of the Give Me Liberty! textbook, Dr. McIntyre’s Monday Morning Announcements, and the At the River I Stand documentary.  You do NOT need to use footnotes or references for these sources, nor do you need a bibliography.

• Do NOT use any direct quotations from any of the sources.  Use of direct quotations will result in a 20-point penalty.

• You MUST AVOID PLAGIARISM (i. e. making use of another writer’s words as if they are your own).  This includes using the words of the textbook, of my announcements, or the documentary as if they are your own.  Even using four or five words in a row from another source as if they are your own may be considered an act of plagiarism.  It is best to write your essay without looking directly at the textbook or my written announcements, or while listening to the documentary so as to avoid plagiarism.  Papers will be submitted using Blackboard’s Safe Assign feature to check for plagiarism.  Acts of plagiarism will result in the assignment of a failing grade on the exam (zero points) and possibly a failing course grade for academic dishonesty (XF).  I will assign such grades only after following the university’s policy for handling acts of academic dishonesty. Please review that policy:

• Your essay may NOT use any outside sources.   This includes other books, articles, encyclopedias, and the Internet. Failure to follow this rule will result in a penalty of 50 points. If you were to use outside sources despite this prohibition, but attempt to hide the use of outside sources by failing to cite them, it would constitute plagiarism (presenting another author’s ideas as if they are your own) and will result in a failing grade on the exam and possibly the assignment of an XF grade for the course.  In short, use only the assigned course materials.

If you have questions about what the question is asking you to do or about any of the rules and requirements, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. McIntyre by email.  To ensure a reply before the exam submission deadline, please do so no later than the end of the day on Sunday, December 12.
