Book Report Guidelines Guidelines: This course requires a written book report to be submitted during Module 3 (Week 3) on a text associated with course content and objectives. Some recommendations are made below, or you may have a book that you wish to review, or your instructor may have suggestions. During Module 1, submit your book report selection to your instructor via course email for required approval. To send the email, select People in the Course Menu. Select your Instructor’s name and then Send Message. Once you have instructor approval for your book, begin making notes about what the author(s) reveal about intelligence, how this contributes to the field, how it relates or expands upon what you already know about intelligence, and what perspective(s) are added to the challenges for U.S. intelligence. In addition to providing a summary of the book, ensure that you address the issues identified in the book review assignment. Namely, your review should report on what the author(s) reveal about events or intelligence issues that is new. It should also address the following:  How does this contribute to knowledge in the field?  How does this relate to, or expand on, what you already know about intelligence and the workings of the intelligence community?  Does the book add perspective to the challenges facing U.S. intelligence in the twenty-first century? Write an 8- to 10-page paper, using more pages if necessary to produce a thorough and quality review. Formatting requirements are: Times New Roman, 12-point, double-spaced and APA format. Include an APA-formatted bibliography and footnote the sources you use or quote in the paper. This includes paraphrasing and direct quotes from other writers and sources. Do not fail to do this; otherwise you would be plagiarizing other people’s work. This is an academic offense, usually punished by failure of the course. For questions concerning references or citations within the paper students should consult the American Psychological Association’s Publication Manual, fifth edition, (or the APA Web site at http://www.apa.org as a guide for formatting. Another useful site is http://www.apastyle.org. Contact your instructor with any questions. Additional assistance is located in the Academic Resources folder in the Resources area of the course accessible via the left-hand navigation menu. Book Recommendations: Choose a recent book on an intelligence topic. You may do your book report on See No Evil by Robert Baer, or you may request to use another book if you wish. The recent autobiography of former CIA Director Richard Helms, or books about Aldrich Ames or Robert Hansson, various aspects of 9/11, Al-Qa’ida, and international terrorism would also do. There are new books and articles on the Cuban Missile Crisis that now incorporate information from some of those involved on the Soviet side. If you wanted to study a foreign intelligence service, there are books on the British, Israelis, Russians, and Chinese. You may also find something valuable on the Indians (RAW) or the Pakistanis (ISI), or other related topics.
