Introduction/Thesis statement: please start your essay, in your introduction, with a one-sentence, 3-part thesis statement. It is the most important feature of your essay.

Let’s see an example using the essay question: “Should we celebrate Columbus Day?”

Thesis statement A:

No, we should not because Columbus began the transatlantic slave trade(1), mutilated indo-Americans(2), and brought disease that killed millions(3).

Thesis statement B:

Yes, we should because Columbus linked the Americas with Afro-Eurasia(1), began the Columbian Exchange(2), and made Spain a global power(3).

That thesis statement will now be used to organize your essay. The first body paragraph will explain point 1, the second body paragraph point 2, and the third body paragraph point 3.

The thesis (and your argument) fails if one of your paragraphs is about Columbus’s love of cats because that was never included in the actual thesis statement at the beginning of the essay. If you do want to discuss Columbus and cats (he probably hated cats), then be sure to go back and change that thesis statement to:

“Yes, we should because Columbus linked the Americas with Afro-Eurasia(1), began the Colombian Exchange(2), made Spain a global power(3), and he loved cats(4).

Conclusion: after your introduction and 3 body paragraphs, please end with a conclusion paragraph that summarizes your work and restates the thesis

Sources:

Your essay must have a balance of primary and secondary sources. Each paragraph should have at least one source that you are using as evidence. Quoting primary sources is good but be sure to explain and analyze that quote and make sure it fits within your overall argument. Secondary sources do not have to be quoted as frequently but instead paraphrase. Remember to include a citation for ideas that are not your own (all quotes and paraphrases that are not your own).

Please do not use the internet as one of your sources. Do not use Wikipedia or online encyclopedias. The information and sources must come from secondary sources and primary sources provided. If you have a brilliant outside source from another library ask me about using it first.
1. Have a clear argument. Include a thesis statement in the first paragraph. The paper should develop your argument and provide evidence in support of it. Include a conclusion sentence which summarizes your argument.
2. Avoid generalizations; be specific. Avoid vague terms like “people” when you mean “peasants” or “workers” or “the nobility.” If the historical reality is complex (i.e. not all nobles were selfishly hanging onto privilege, or the delegates of the Third Estate were not so “representative” because they were mostly lawyers), then say so.
3. When possible, use the active voice rather than the passive. Example: “Robespierre introduced the Terror in 1793” is stronger than “The Terror was introduced by Robespierre in 1793.”
4. Edit carefully so that your writing is clear, making sure that each word effectively conveys your point and is not wasted. Avoid run-on sentences and sentence fragments.
5. When writing about historical events, use the past tense. It is okay to use the present tense when discussing a document or book; however, saying “Robespierre implored the National Convention to introduce the Terror because. . . ” is more dramatic and therefore more effective than writing “In this document, Robespierre argues that the Terror is necessary because . . .”
