RESEARCH QUESTION: Tell me what it is that you most want to find out about this topic, ie “I’m particularly interested in how Victorian missionaries created written forms of Pacific languages”.

Instructions for topic outline assignment:

– Save the template, type in the information, and print out the results.  Take more than one page if needed.

– Be as specific as you can about your topic and research question, as far as you are able.

  • please pick a topic that relates to our course material: the Pacific world since 1500. There needs to be a Pacific connection. For example, “the Canadian fur trade on the west coast” isn’t enough, but “the Hudson’s Bay Company post in Hawai’i” would be great.

– If you want to sound me out about possible topics, consult me as soon as possible.  Email is the quickest way.

– Attend the in-class library session.  This is by far the best way to learn exactly how to find the types of sources you will need for this assignment.

– Follow the instructions on the template.  If your book, document or article is appropriate but full bibliographical references are missing or incomplete, I will deduct a half mark.

– you can change your topic later if you wish, but it’s a good idea to take the time to find a topic you can live with.

– you don’t have to agree with the argument in the secondary research materials you find; a good essay will show awareness of varying perspectives on the topic.

– Review the course outline concerning the importance of handing the assignment in on time.
