CASE STUDY #1 Mrs. Irene Times is a 90 year old widow with no children. She has a number of nieces and nephews who visit regularly. She has been a resident in the nursing home for 6 months. She is unable to walk because of a hip fracture; however she is able to manipulate herself well in a wheelchair. Her eyesight is good. She is slightly hard of hearing. She has arthritis that affects her hands but she maintains a comfort level with medication. She is able to feed herself with built up utensils and within the last few weeks has begun writing letters to friends and relatives. She is alert and oriented. She does not attend many activities because her 88-year-old sister who is her roommate refuses to go and Mrs. Times doesn’t want to leave her alone in the room. However, when they are alone in the room they spend much of the time bickering with each other. When relatives come to visit her, she continually asks to whom her belongings were distributed and which items were sold at the time her apartment was closed. She scolds them for not keeping more of her things until they “saw the corpse”. She has some of her own furniture, including her TV which she enjoys. She has other things that she has made, such as pillows and afghans, in her room. Her husband was a railroad employee and she and her husband were able to travel a great deal.
