MGT4302 – Human resources and communications project management

Assignment Objective:

To have students make contact with project managers in industry and gain an understanding of the nature of a project manager’s job—what the responsibilities are, what the challenges are, and what makes a project manager’s job rewarding.

Assignment Overview:

This is a group assignment.

Students will be formed into groups of 5-6. Each individual within the group will be responsible for finding a project manager to interview and for interviewing them. As a group, consolidate the findings from the interview to prepare and submit a report that addresses the information requested in the sections below.

This assignment is worth 15% of the final course grade.

Assignment Instructions:

1.     Create an Action and Communications Plan

With your team, plan out all the work that needs to be done to complete this project. Use the Group Field Research Action and Communications Plan template to report this information. Then use this plan to track your project and deliver it on time.

2.     Prepare for Interview

Design a set of interview questions that you will ask a project manager that you find in the industry of your choice. The questions that you prepare will need to help you determine the following information:

  • Project manager’s name
  • Project manager’s organization
  • Title or role within the organization
  • Years of experience
  • Current project
  • History of projects/project experience
  • Project manager responsibilities
  • Typical activities in the day in the life of a project manager
  • Why they became a project manager
  • What they find motivating/most rewarding about being a project manager
  • What typical challenges do they face when dealing with project team members and/or stakeholders. How they overcome these challenges.
  • What communication activities they perform
  • What challenges they have with communications and how they overcome these challenges

Append the interview questions as an appendix to the report.

3.     Set-up Interviews

Find a project manager who is currently working in industry or who has retired from a career of project management. Set-up an interview with this professional. You can meet with them one-on-one, or via phone or other technology. It is your choice. Think about the best method of being able to get the information you need and to optimize your learning.

Each individual within the group must find a project manager, set-up an interview with that project manager, conduct the interview, and provide written findings from the interview to the team for input into the group report. Failure to complete these activities may result in a 0% or other allocation of grade on this assignment for that individual, at the discretion of the professor.

Remember that when you contact organizations or speak with a professional, you represent Algonquin College and must act accordingly. Ensure that you are:

  • Polite—Thank people for their time and consideration.
  • Professional—Use appropriate business language (verbal and non-verbal) and dress professionally if meeting face-to-face or in a Skype meeting.
  • Learning—These project managers have a lot of experience to share with you. Gain as much knowledge from them as you can.
  • Networking—You are always making an impression when you interact with others. You never know if this interaction may, at one point, lead to an employment opportunity. Treat each interaction as though it might.

4.     Conduct Interviews

Each individual conducts the interview with their selected project manager, records the responses to the questions, and submits these findings to the group. Note: You must interact with a project manager. Sending a list of questions to be answered and accepting a written response is not allowed.

5.     Create and Submit the Report

Create a report that addresses the information requested in section 1. Prepare for Interview above and that also contains the following requirements:

  • Title Page
  • Table of Contents
  • Page numbers
  • Organized section headings with content:
    • Executive Summary
    • Introduction
    • Approach
    • Findings
    • Conclusion
    • Appendix
  • Logically organized thoughts
  • Appropriate business language
  • Appendix with Interview Questions
  • Correct spelling and grammar
