Rehab 715-900
Assignment 2 – Road to a Research Prospectus
Due Date: NOON (11:59AM) on Wednesday, November 20, 2019
The purpose of this assignment is to take the next 5-6 weeks to slowly
methodically critique four (4) peer-reviewed articles from the scholarly literature.
The literature critiques will focus in on ONE topic area of rehabilitation that
interests you. All four (4) articles explore one consistent topic area: which means
you must first select the topic area. Then, each of the four selected peer-reviewed
(aka scholarly) articles should explore some aspect of that same topic area.
General Directions for Identifying a Topic Area for Assignment 2
Step 1: identify an area of Rehab that interests you. It needs to be a topic area of
rehab that has some available peer-reviewed literature AND the topic needs to
intrigue you enough that you’re willing to stick with it for the next two months!
Step 2: develop a couple tentative broad research questions or hypotheses on the
topic area you selected. Know this – you WILL tweak, rework/reword,
operationalize and define the questions as you explore the literature. (Remember
the multiple revisions we did in the lecture notes?).
Step 3: conduct a library search of the topic area to find
peer-reviewed articles on the topic area. Review the
article abstracts first to help determine which articles you
want to fully read. Think of a literature review as an
inverted triangle – it starts broad and then becomes more
specific or focused.
Step 4: Choose peer-reviewed articles that are valuable to you and your topic area
of interest. Create and save each article critique as a separate Microsoft word
document (you will submit 4 critique documents to the drop box area).
Step 5: Use the following 10 questions to critique EACH of the four (4) peerreviewed articles you select:

Peer-Reviewed Article Critique Questions
State your initial research problem/question or research hypothesis area
1. Full citation and name of the article selected?
2. How well did the researchers identify the concern/gap/need for this
research? How could you tell?
3. What are the main research questions?
4. What was the identified population being researched?
5. What methods for data collection were used?
6. What analysis of the data was conducted? Quantitative or qualitative?
Did it seem rigorous? Explain.
7. Identify some of the key results. Include effect size, correlation values,
other supporting statistics if available, or identify major themes
established if qualitative.
8. Based on questions 1-6, what is your personal critique of the research?
What is your major takeaway from this study? Do you believe it is
quality research? Why?
9. Ideas for future research (from the literature or your own ideas).
10. Revised research questions or IF-THEN hypotheses that came to mind
when I read this article (1-2 questions).
There is an example PDF article critique in the Assignment area.

1. Which article did you select?
Prosek, E. A. & Hurt, K. M. (2014). Measuring professional identity development among counselor
trainees. Counselor Education & Supervision, 53(1), 284-293. doi: 10.1002/j.1556-6978.2014.00063.x
2. How well did the researchers identify the concern/gap/need for this research? How could you tell?
The researchers explained how there is ongoing struggle to establish a solid professional identity in the
field of counseling and counseling trainees then struggle in their own development. The researchers
explain the process trainees often experience when going through their program and throughout their
career, recognizing that professional identity is an ongoing developmental process. The researchers
appear to use up to date and relevant literature to build and justify their research. It was clear the
direction the researchers were moving in and by the time I reached the purpose of the study, I has a good
grasp on what they wanted to explore for their research.
3. What are the main research questions?
1. Are the scores on the PIVS (Professional Identity and Values Scale) subscales different for novice
and advanced counselor trainees?
2. Is there a relationship between the stage of professional development and counselor trainee status?
The researchers hypothesized that there will be a difference in the scores between novice and
advanced counselor trainees, specifically advanced trainees will score higher in the later stages of
professional development.
4. What was the identified population being researched?
Focus was on graduate students enrolled in a CACREP accredited counseling program. They had a total
of 161 participants. They seemed to lack diversity in the population in race/ethnicity, gender, and sexual
orientation. The participants were divided into novice trainees (enrolled in first or second semester) and
advanced trainees (enrolled in practicum or internship).
5. What methods for data collection were used?
Reached out to department chairs of CACREP programs across the country. Had a poor response rate.
Demographic info focused on age, gender, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity.
Used the Professional Identity and Engagement Scale and the Professional Identity and Values Scale for
data collection.
6. What analysis of the data was conducted? Quantitative or qualitative? Did it seem rigorous?
Explain.
Used a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) to test their hypothesis, a quantitative approach to
compare the different scales and groups. They calculated the alpha for both scales, throughout the
different stages. This seemed like a rather rigorous process of comparing the data on multiple levels. I
want to note they had just enough participants to run their analysis (161 and needed 158).
7. Identify some of the key results. Include effect size, correlation values, other supporting statistics
if available, or identify major themes established if qualitative.
The MANOVA results were statistically significant (A = .104, F(4, 156) = 4.52, p = .002). This
supports that there were differences in means in professional orientation and values and the stages of
development (novice vs. advanced). The effect size fell between medium and large. The researchers do
note that the stage 2 subscale was unacceptable/not significant at .59.

8. Based on questions 1-6, what is your personal critique of the research. What is your major
takeaway from this study? Do you believe it is quality research?
Overall, it seems that this research article had a level of rigor that I would say is a quality form of
research. Their findings do show that there is a difference in the level of professional identity
development based on the amount of training you have, which makes a lot of sense. I will note that their
sample size was rather small, which does make me wonder a bit about the statistics. Also, I am curious
about the differences between practicum and internship, since that already has a different level or rigor
as well. As the researchers note in their limitations section, it would be important to also consider the
courses the trainees completed, since that is likely not consistent for everyone and how that may
influence professional identity. Overall, I am able to tay that this seems like quality research and I can
take away that the more experience one gets, the more established their professional identity becomes.
9. Ideas for future research (from the literature or your own ideas).
More closely investigating specific factors in internship that are influential in shaping professional
identity. They also add extending this kind of study to more experienced counselors and not limit it to
trainees. Also, perhaps comparing CACREP and non-CACREP programs. They also then suggest
following a cohort through their program. Perhaps even extending this into the first few years after
graduation. I would also be interested in perhaps integrating more about life experiences and what made
someone pursue a degree in counseling to see if that impacts their professional identity.
10. Potential research hypotheses that came to mind when I read this article:
What types of lived experiences influence decisions to pursue a professional career in clinical mental
health counseling?
If-then statement of hypothesis… If graduate students have lived experience (self or family) of mental
health issues then they are more likely to pursue careers in CMHC.
Is PVIS measured professional identity different for students in CACREP and non-CACREP CMHC
programs?
If-then statement of hypothesis: If students are in a CACREP-accredited CMHC then their measured
PVIS scores will be different than those students in a non-CACREP accredited MHC program. Assignment 2 Road to Research Prospectus 3
