On March 23rd 2010, former U.S President Barack Obama signed a new bill into law which is known as The Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA) which gave legal authority healthcare to American Indians and Alaska Natives. This was part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act which was unique because it didn’t have an expiration date compared to the previous law which Congress approved the IHCIA and had expired in the year 2000. The two basic laws that made the basic legislative authority for the Indian Health Service are The Indian Health Care Improvement Act of 1976 and the Snyder Act of 1921. Another important act is the Transfer Act which approved the transfer of maintenance and operation of hospitals and health facilities for Indians to the public health. This Transfer Act also allowed all services related to the delivery of health care to Indian people. Furthermore, the Indian Health Facilities Act allowed funding for the construction of Indian health facilities to be used to assist in the construction of non-Federal community hospitals which service Indian and non-Indian patients Finally, the Indian Health Facilities Act expanded both the Snyder Act and the Transfer Act which provided additional health care services to be provided to Indians.
