Application Papers

 

Overall:                              Students will apply course material to a job where they have worked. This includes any jobs the person has had, including current or past. If a student has never had a job then they may use other organizational settings and apply the concepts such as a parent’s job or imagining a job that they may seek in the future.

                                            

Length:                              At least 4-5 double-spaced typed pages. There is no maximum page limit.

                             

English Skills:                  An assignment will be considered unacceptable if it contains any combination of five spelling or grammatical errors and the assignment may be returned to the student for corrections.

 

Late Penalty:                    Late papers will receive a zero grade. Please contact the instructor regarding

                                             extenuating circumstances.

 

Grading:                            Students will be graded on their ability to integrate and apply class material with real-life behavior based on the workplace setting being analyzed. Students will be graded on the quality of application examples utilizing real-life situations in the workplace. A significant portion of the grade will be based on the appropriateness, specificity, and richness of real-life examples cited. The applications should provide sufficient details from the workplace that relate to the topic being discussed. The papers must also include a thorough summary of class material for the topic being discussed. If a student does not have sufficient workplace experiences to draw upon they should contact the instructor for helpful tips for alternatives for answering these questions.

 

Privacy:                              The papers must not include names of real people or any discussions that involve an invasion of privacy for someone not in the course. Other people must remain anonymous and students should makes references such as, “One of my managers was a democratic style leader who involved all of us in decision-making,” etc.

 

Format:                              Papers must be numbered for each of the questions in the assignment. For the purposes of these assignments a paragraph is defined as at least four sentences.

APPLICATION PAPER 2: INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES AND ASSESSMENT

 

Choose 5 of the following 7 topics for your paper.

 

1.  The textbook describes Cognitive Ability Tests (beginning on page 120). Using the textbook please describe these types of tests (minimum two paragraphs, 10 points) and how they might be used in your workplace or organizational experiences (minimum one paragraph, 10 points).

 

2.  The textbook describes factors related to Integrity Testing as a selection tool (beginning on page 127). Using the textbook please define and summarize information on this topic (minimum two paragraphs, 10 points) and apply these concepts by describing how integrity applies to your workplace or organizational experiences (minimum one paragraph, 10 points).

 

3.  The textbook describes the concept of Emotional Intelligence (beginning on page 108 and again on 130). Using the textbook please define and summarize information on this topic (minimum two paragraphs, 10 points) and describe how emotional intelligence plays a role at your workplace or organizational experiences (minimum one paragraph, 10 points).

 

4.  The textbook describes Interviews (beginning on page 131). Using the textbook please define and summarize information on this topic (minimum two paragraphs, 10 points) and describe some ways how an effective interview process could work at your workplace or organizational experiences (minimum one paragraph, 10 points).

 

5.  The textbook describes Assessment Centers (beginning on page 133). Using the textbook please summarize how assessment centers are used in the evaluation process (minimum two paragraphs, 10 points) and apply these concepts to your workplace or organizational experiences (minimum one paragraph, 10 points).

 

6.  The textbook describes Work Sample Tests (beginning on page 135). Using the textbook please summarize how work sample tests are used in the evaluation process (minimum two paragraphs, 10 points) and apply these concepts to your workplace or organizational experiences (minimum one paragraph, 10 points).

 

7.  The textbook describes Situational Judgment Tests (beginning on page 136). Using the textbook please summarize how situational judgment tests are used in the evaluation process (minimum two paragraphs, 10 points) and apply these concepts to your workplace or organizational experiences (minimum one paragraph, 10 points).

 

Extra Credit: Answer 6 or 7 questions for extra credit (maximum 10 points extra credit). Please note that the first five responses in your paper will be graded the normal way and you may respond to one or two more topics (they should be at the end of the paper and identified as “Extra Credit”) for a possible ten extra points. For example you may decide to respond to 1, 3, 4, 6, and 7. For extra credit you may also decide to respond to 2 and perhaps 5. 2 and/or 5 should be at the end of the paper and marked as “Extra Credit.”
