Data collection is not limited to scaled responses to questions. In some cases, the best approach is to capture open-ended responses, which can be hard to analyze and present to a client. In this journal entry, youll practice a simple way to show trends in open-ended responses (i.e., qualitative data).
The website Glassdoor compiles reviews on employers. Reviews are anonymous submissions from current and/or former employees and the organization is unable to remove or alter reviews. The reviews consist of numerical star ratings of criteria such as the willingness of the reviewer to recommend his organization to a friend. Much like Industrial and Organizational Psychology survey work, the website also allows for open-ended written comments to be submitted. Summarizing open-ended survey data can be a challenge to Industrial and Organizational Psychology professionals tasked with providing employee feedback to an organization. Word Clouds are a simple tool used to identify trends in open-ended comments. For this journal entry, visit Glassdoor.com (you may have to create an account or log in) and select a local organization or an organization you would like to work for in the future and perform the following:
- On the organization’s page, view their reviews. For this assignment, you must select an organization with at least 10 reviews.
- Cut and paste 10 open-ended statements from the reviews into a Word Document.
- Go to the following website and use the following instructions to create a Word Cloud of these reviews.
- Click Wizard.
- Click Type or Paste Text.
- Copy and paste the comments from reviews you selected in the previous step.
- Make sure not to copy and paste the word Pros”.
- Save your word cloud as an image to your computer.
- Insert your word cloud image into your journal entry. The words that appear the largest will be the most used words.
Write two paragraphs about the Word Cloud. In the first paragraph, identify the organization you selected and the words that are largest in the word cloud. The largest words in the Word Cloud indicate the themes most often used in the reviews of the organization. In your second paragraph, break down three takeaways for the organization from these comments. This can include things the organization is doing well or things the organization should work on.
