Application of Epidemiology Findings

Epidemiology may be defined as:

“…the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in specified populations, and the application of this study to the control of health problems.”

Epidemiology research in the following areas have led to findings that have resulted in changes to our lives, including:

  • Motorcycle accident research
    • Helmets
  • Cancer research
    • Smoking restrictions
  • Workplace safety
  • Asbestos
  • Lead poisoning research
    • Removal from paint
    • Removal from gasoline
  • Food safety
    • Allergic reactions to peanuts
  • Heart disease research
  • Vaccination

      Using one of the examples above, or one of your own, discuss what the research has found in terms of cause of death, injury or disease; and how that has resulted in a change to our lives. Remember, review the Instructions for what is considered a quality response. To assist discussion responses by other students to your discussion submission, you must pose a question at the end of your submission, ie, “do you agree with the required use of seat belts?” Discussion submissions must not exceed 300 words.
