MAN 4711: Assignment Instructions
The Issues (5 issues@12%= 60%)
On completing this course, my goal for you is that you understand fully the breadth and complexity of issues that matter to you. It is important that, whatever you care about- homelessness; gender equality; environmental degradation; gun violence; education; gentrification- that you actively learn about the factors that affect this issue. How can you help? In what small or large way? What are the laws that support or hamper progress? What needs to change? How might businesses and organizations get involved?
Each week listed on your syllabus as “The Issues” will address an issue that affects our communities. These are issues you may relate to or simply will learn from. For each issue session, we will have a guest speaker that speaks to the topic for that week. You are expected to ask questions and engage with the speaker.
You are expected to walk away from each issue class with three key learnings:
An understanding of the context and complexity of the problem- the history.
Be able to describe the laws/policies that enable or hamper the issue.
Be able to articulate a course of action/recommendations that could stem the issue- You MUST state actionable steps that can be done by individuals and by organizations.
This semester allows for 5 issues to be discussed. Each issue paper you submit values 12%. Submitting all 5 papers accounts for 60% of your final grade.
Presenting Your Assignment
Your assignment is to write a short one-page paper (no more than 400 words) that covers your understanding of the 3 key learnings listed above. This should be done as a word document, single spaced, 12 point font. You will submit one paper for each of the five (5) issues presented by speakers throughout the semester. You must submit a paper for each issue. Be sure to include your full name and panther ID#. Please adhere to the word limit.
Note well: I will also be considering grammar, spelling and other errors which will indicate the extent to which you have re-read your work and paid careful attention to how your thoughts and ideas are presented. You risk losing points for poorly presented papers in addition to the content of your response.
Submitting your Assignment
Assignments must be submitted through your course’s Canvas TurnItIn.
Each issue assignment is due the Saturday following each Issue class, by 10pm. (For example, Sept 23rd’s Class, Issue 1: Gentrification, is due on Saturday Sept 26th, 10pm).
Late assignments immediately lose 15% of their value, and an additional 15% per day thereafter. Do not wait until the last minute to submit your assignment- absolutely no excuses will be accepted.
PLEASE NOTE: I cannot accept assignments via email, they must be checked for copyright so must be submitted through Canvas. Your assignment is not considered submitted until it is properly submitted through Turnitin. If you think you will need help submitting, allow ample time to do so, and contact FIU Online Canvas Support should you need assistance.
