Write a literary analysis of James Thurber’s "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty."  This essay should be at least 750 words.

In your paper, you will need to (1) thoughtfully examine the short story as a piece of writing/literature, (2) analyze how the author used his/her craft to present a theme to his/her readers, and (3)  support your position. You may use ideas that were generated during the class discussion if you wish.

Details

The introductory paragraph of your paper should include information to help the audience understand what this essay is about: the author’s name, the title of the short story, a few sentences of background information on the short story and the characters, and a thesis statement that presents an arguable point about a theme in the text. The body paragraphs should focus on an analysis of how and why the author used certain techniques/devices to communicate his/her message. In the final paragraph, you should bring the essay to a logical end by restating the thesis, summarizing the main points, and making a statement about the significance of your discussion.

Your Audience

Assume that your audience your instructor and your peers have read the short story.

Tone

The language and stylistic choices should be appropriate for your audience.

Minimum Requirements

  • at least 3  pages long and formatted according to MLA guidelines.
  • Include an original title that reflects the topic of the paper.
  • Include an introductory paragraph, 3-5 body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.
  • Include a thesis statement that presents your topic and an arguable point about the author’s treatment of a theme.
  • Include some or all of the following types of evidence to support your thesis: examples from the story, quotations, and contextual information (that which helps the reader of the essay understand where your ideas are coming from) and/or paraphrases of textual material. Choose your evidence wisely. Don’t use just any examples to support your thesis; use examples that provide the best support for your thesis.
  • Include analysis. You are not writing a summary of the short story. (This is where most students fall short.) Consider the overview of the short story to be brief, and assume that your reader has read the story. You should include contextual information, if necessary, but otherwise, the bulk of your essay should concentrate on analysis. Essentially, you are presenting an argument about how and why the author presents a certain theme. Your essay must show evidence of clear interpretation and insightful analysis.
  • Introduce and elaborate upon quotations; do not just “drop” them into your writing.
  • Organize your paper logically with clear topic sentences and transitions to move the reader along and show relationships between ideas within your paper.
  • Use third person point of view and present tense.
  • Pay careful attention to grammar, usage, and mechanics.
  • Include a Works Cited in MLA-8 format that includes the name of the short story and the secondary sources that have been used. Be certain that you have included in-text citations throughout your essay whenever you have quoted, summarized, referenced, or paraphrased information.
